Annual Knowledge Contest
Each year we sponsor competitions in spelling or mathematics skills for students in grades 5-8
Description:
Students will take a math test and a spelling test (or only one, if desired) with a 30 minute time limit for each test. No collaboration, assistance, or talking will be permitted once the tests have begun. Corrected tests won't be returned to students nor will scores be disclosed, but placements will be announced and published. Pencils and scratch paper will be provided. The front page of a test must be completed including the student's name in order to win. Any student residing within the boundaries of the Kaukauna Area School District or attending any Kaukauna school in grades 5-8 is eligible to participate.
The competitions are generally held in February and March. Please watch the
Events & Calendar page for schedules, registration information, and other details for this year's contest (available there in a PDF document once the registration period begins).
PRE-REGISTRATION ON THIS WEBSITE IS REQUIRED FOR ALL PARTICIPANTS
Tests:
Each grade will have a different test in each subject but the same 30 minute time limit. No calculators, notes, dictionaries or other references are allowed. Unanswered questions are not counted.
Mathematics - Questions 1-30 are worth one point each. Questions 31-40 are worth two points each
if the correct unit of measure is included as required. Missing units reduce the question to one possible point. Ties will be broken by the number of correct answers for questions 31-40 first, then by the number correct for questions 21-30.
Spelling - Contestants must proofread each group of four words. Each question has either one misspelling or none at all. The correct spelling or the word "NONE" must be recorded to earn one point for a question. Ties will be broken by the number of correct answers for questions 41-50 first, then by the number correct for questions 31-40.
Competition Levels & Awards:
Local - Students may take both tests. Only the top scorer in each grade for each test will advance to the diocesan competition. They will receive ten
Columbus Credits, as they commit to an additional round of competition. All other participants will receive two
Columbus Credits. Second-place finishers may compete in the diocesan competition as alternates if top scorers are unable or unwilling. Students who win for both tests must choose which they will take at the diocesan level so the appropriate alternate can be registered for the other. Winners and alternates must obtain a YOUTH TRAVEL CARD in order to register at the diocesan competition.
Diocesan - Students may only compete in either mathematics or spelling at the diocesan contest, not both. Awards will be provided by the State Council and usually consist of medals. Top scorers and second-place finishers can progress to the state level. Third- and fourth- place finishers may serve as alternates. Winners and alternates must obtain a YOUTH TRAVEL CARD in order to register at the state competition.
State - Students may only compete in either mathematics or spelling at the
state contest, not both. Awards will be provided by the State Council for first, second, and third place scores.
Parents & Volunteers:
Parents and others accompanying students will wait in a separate room during the test periods to ensure silence for the contestants. At some competitions concessions may be sold or courtesy refreshments provided. Older students not eligible to compete and adults may volunteer to supervise or correct tests
only for categories in which they have no student competing. Volunteers will be given ten
Columbus Credits in recognition of their assistance, upon request.
